5 Simple Ways to Change Your Ab Workouts Forever.

Posted by Barbara Williams 1 December, 2009

The old fashioned abdominal workout really is out-of-date – many advances have been made in the past 10 years that have shown us the real way to get our abs in shape, and why simple crunches won’t “spot-remove” fat from our belly.

Here are 5 reasons those classic routines no longer work.

#5: When it Comes to Ab Workouts, Crunches Are Out of Date.

Go with the flow and give up on the crunches — they just don’t have the relevance that they once did. Because they seemed to be the direct descendent of the sit-up, crunches had a long lifespan, but there are many more things you can be doing.

Due to the misguided focus on endless crunching for a reduction in the fat around your belly (even though this is a myth, and spot fat reduction isn’t possible), people really wasted a lot of time crunching when they didn’t have to.

#4: Forget the Exercise Tools, Too.

If you’re about to spend some big cash on some kind of infomercial advice dedicated entirely to your abs, don’t bother — all the best and most effective moves you can do with just your body.

Of course, if a piece of equipment provides the motivational spark that allows you to actually get your ab workouts done, there’s no harm in using it — just don’t expect any sort of miracle devices.

#3: An Abdominal Workout That Targets Your Upper & Lower Abs Separately? Forget It.

It’s a bit of a myth that you can ‘only’ exercise your upper or lower abs, separately, in order to develop them — most of the big studies out there have shown that the abs function kind of like one big unit, and that the average person can’t isolate each part.

Stay consistent when it comes to your ab exercises and don’t obsess over separating your upper and lower regions.

#2: Switch From One Exercise to Another.

It’s a very common thing to see people giving up on ab workouts because they were limited entirely to the crunch and extremely small variations on that one move.

Every single study done since then has proven that sticking to these limited amounts of exercise keeps your abs from really developing as they should — variety really is important.

#1: A Fitness Ab Workout Needs to Include the Bicycle.

The old ab workouts never featured the bicycle exercise, which involves putting your hands behind your head and then kicking outwards while pointing your elbows from side to side (check a video of it online).

And yet there’s really nothing like it — above all else, this one amazing exercise, which increases your workout by 178%, is what separates old boring crunches from new, great routines.
