Card Counting on Black Jack 21- Back Counting Advantages and Disadvantages

Posted by Anthony McCoy 19 October, 2009

The process of Back-Counting, is professionally known as “Wonging”, It’s basically a process when someone is standing behind the dealers table in which also has players on, and when the cards are being dealt, a count is also being taken. The proposed idea of Back- Counting was brought forward by Stanford Wong, and naturally because his name is Wong, the process was also named that.

Once the count is at a point which the player has an advantage, the player will then enter the game, or “wong in”. As there advantages raises, the player may raise there bets, or lower them if the advantage is going down. Many players rather prefer a flat bet when back counting, and continue to bet that exact amount when they enter the game. Some players may “Wong out” or leave the game when the count is at a point when there is no advantage, or stay until the game is shuffled.

Shoe games is usually where back counting is done, and consisting of 4, 6, or 8 decks, and even pitch games of 1 or 2 decks of cards. The whole purpose in this is because the count will be more stable in a shoe game, and considering most players are not likely to only play a hand or two then leave the game. Most casinos will even deny a player a “mid shoe entry” when either a single or double deck game is going which completely stops the possibility to “wong” the table. Another point is that many casinos apply more efforts to minimize the effectiveness of card counters on both shoe and pitch games.

Back-counting is a bit different from your traditional card-counting, and that is that the players do not play every single hand. This offers a few advantages. For one, the player will not play any hands at which he does not have a statistical advantage. This will reduces variance and fluctuations in the game, while increasing the advantage of that player. Another great advantage is that players does not have to alter their bet size as much, or at all if they choose. Big changes in a bet size are method that casinos look for to detect card-counters, and this is eliminated with back-counting.

Unfortunately, there are a few disadvantages to back counting. First, by not staying on a table long enough, casino comps will not be earned. Second, some people may dislike the fact that you are entering the middle of a game, and may also feel the flow of the cards have been interrupted. And last, by coming in and out of a game attracts attention from casino employees, and will be looked at like a card counter.
