Choose the Right Anal Fissure Treatment

If you are suffering from short-term anal fissures, you can try to heal it with treatment at home. Typically, with anal fissure treatment at home, you can see the fissures healing in about 4 to 6 weeks. Any pain associated with bowel movements will begin to vanish within a couple of days of starting the healing.

An example of self healing is immersing your buttocks in water for 20 minutes, and repeating a couple of times throughout the day. This is called a sitz bath. To assuage the stool add more liquid and fiber to your diet. Under the instruction of your doctor you can take laxatives.

In some cases, these home remedies are not sufficient to heal the fissure or bring relief from the pain. Fissures that persist over 6 weeks are known as long term anal fissures or chronic anal fissures, and they require additional healing and medication.

Medication: For patients suffering from chronic fissures, an experienced DR will usually suggest medicines as the first-line treatment. Let’s look at some of the medicines that are used for long term anal fissure cure.

1. Nitroglycerin cream can be used to cut anal pressure, or in other words, it assists in loosening the tightness in and around the anus. When applying the cream, be sure to only use a very small amount of cream, as there are serious side effects, including fainting due to blood pressure drop. More common side effects include headaches. The cream should be gently applied to the anus and surrounding areas.

2. The two medicines called Nifedipine and Diltiazem are in pills form which reduce presure in internal anal sphincter.

3. Botox – Botox, also known as Botulinum toxin is also used as an successful anal fissure treatment. A fixed amount of botox is injected into the sphincter. This causes the muscles in the sphincter to paralyze, relieving tension on the fissures.

Surgery: When all else fails, doctors may use surgery as the last option to cure anal fissures. Lateral Internal Sphincterotomy is the most popular form of surgery which has a high success rate. In this, a small incision is made into the internal anal sphincter. This helps to decrease anal resting pressure and anal fissure pain. This surgery does not actually close the anal fissure, but makes conditions whereby the fissures can heal on their own.

typically this type of surgery is very successful, but there are a few negative side effects to a lateral internal sphincterotomy. 8% of patients later report incontinence which means they pass stools or gas without any control to stop it. Nitroglycerine cream can help this in the long term and there is no medication that comes close to working as well as surgery.

For many the benefits of surgery exceed any Weaknesses. Compared to at home treatment, surgery has a higher success rate, fewer relapses, and last longer.

Anal advancement flap method is another procedure carried out to the women who is going to give birth. This procedure is a best way to avoid any high resting pressure. The doctor’s remove the fissure edges and sew it with healthy tissue on that area.
