Choosing The Right Football Cleats
Football cleats are sports footwear which have the soles fitted with cleats or studs. This kind of footwear provides extra support and grip to the player on hard, soft and slippery surfaces. When deciding upon a pair of football cleats there are a number of factors to consider, of which I will now discuss.
Shoe Material
Leather – The upper of cleat shoes are usually made from leather or synthetics. Leather shoes provide fantastic comfort, flexibility and durability to the player. Shoes of this material allow your feet to breathe making them more comfortable. Leather shoes are often more expensive, however the right pair will worth their value.
Synthetics – Although not as durable and flexible as leather, synthetics are still a good choice. Synthetics require less care than leather and will not absorb as much water on wet surfaces. For additional protection most cleats are made partly of synthetics, usually the ankle or sole.
Type of Cleat
Molded – There are two main type of cleats available, molded and detachable. Molded cleats have studs permanently attached to them. These are specifically used for harder surfaces to provided extra spring and comfort.
Detachable – Detachable cleats use studs which can be removed and replaced as and when required. Those playing on a range of fields will benefit from this type as you have the option to change according to the conditions. Shorter studs are used for dry fields and longer ones when the grass is softer or wet. Detachable shoes have a range of between 6 and 12 studs, which can be of plastic or metal. Of the two molded are, more often than not, less expensive.
Size and Maintenance
Size – Shoe size is a very important consideration in your selection. Feet are known to swell throughout the day so best to purchase in the afternoon, and always try with a football sock. Sizes also vary from style to brand and your normal shoe size can often be different to that of the cleat.
Maintenance – Always break in a new pair of cleats as they will feel better once they have been worn a few times. Make sure to regularly check the condition of the studs and replace when necessary. Clean and protect footwear after every game or training session.
There are any number of football cleats available in today’s market. When considering your next pair take into account these tips. However, most importantly, make sure your chosen shoe is comfortable, durable and suitable for the sport and surface on which you will be playing.
