Christian Funeral Service – Significance And Ceremony

Posted by Frank Brown 17 November, 2009

For a devout Christian, a funeral service is a celebration of the deceased’s journey into eternal life hereafter. It is for this exact reason that funeral services are so spirited, as they are an assertion of the belief that the departed soul has found a permanent abode in the House of the Lord.

Christians believe death to be an entry into the world of continual bliss and exit from this world of pain and suffering. The severity of grief caused by the death of a near and dear one is alleviated by the comforting thought that the dead person is enjoying a blissful afterlife in the Lord’s home with the Lord Himself. The Christian funeral rituals are organized with the same spirit.

Christian funeral service is usually conducted by the pastor. The funeral service normally takes place at the church of which the deceased was a regular visitor. Though the service does not have a casket usually, but when it is being held inside a funeral home, casket is normally present. Usually, Christian funeral ceremony does not have the custom of displaying the body of the deceased person.

The funeral ceremony is organized in the memory of the departed, and it starts with singing of religious hymns and recitals from the Bible and Holy Scriptures. A brief message is delivered by the priest, after which a mass prayer is held.

Next the family and close friends share their sorrows with the group, and the attendees express their sentiments and respect for the dead person and share their ruminations on how the deceased touched their lives and left a lasting void. Some people also opt for doing a visual display of photos of the dead person or play a recorded video from the life of the departed.

The conclusion of the ceremony is the serving of food at a fellowship reception conducted mostly inside the church itself. People do not choose a graveside service normally, but there are some exceptional cases.
