Christmas Is A time For Traditional Gifts

Posted by Harold Denning 19 November, 2009

Christmas will be here before you know it. If you haven’t already started thinking about what gifts you’re going to give this year then you better start soon. Shopping early for Xmas is always a good idea – it saves you a lot of stress and disappointment if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

Last year a lot of retailers carried too much stock. In order to clear their shelves they had to offer hefty discounts. Combine that with the fact that the economic climate is still pretty grim and it’s easy to see why many retailers have quite deliberately set stock levels comparatively low this year.

It may well become difficult to find toys and other popular gift items as we get closer to Christmas. Toys in particular may be problematic. Whilst retailers may attempt to call off new stock in response to customer demand, the fact that most toys these days are made in Asia means that the delivery time tends to be several weeks. Replenishing empty shelves may simply not be an option.

One of this year’s best selling toys so far is Zhu Zhu Pets. These are a collection of five motorized hamsters, complete with a huge collection of toys and accessories. They use artificial intelligence so that they can interact with the children playing with them and their environment. Kids are just going nuts for these hamsters – they were only released in August of this year. They seem to be a dead certainty for this year’s top selling Xmas toy – assuming that stocks don’t run out that is.

Even although they haven’t been out very long, they are already hard to find in the shops. Third party vendors are now selling them on eBay and Amazon for quite a bit more than the official ticket price.

However, if you can’t get hold of the latest fad toy, or if you object to paying inflated prices for a fad that may well fizzle out in a few months, then you could consider a more traditional toy instead. Many of these will not be the very latest craze – but the fact that they have stood the test of time speaks volumes.

If you were after a nice toy for a young boy for example, a son or nephew perhaps, then a train set is always a good choice. A Hornby model train set will give years of fun and will still be in use when the latest craze has fizzled out and been replaced by something new.

The same logic could just as well be applied to other stalwarts such as Scrabble, Monopoly and Lego. All of these have survived the test of time, over generations, and adapted to suit the demands of modern day kids as required.
