Locating the Best Cordless Drill

Posted by Kyle Loroft 23 November, 2009

There are various routes to take when comparing cordless drills. This is one cause of the difficulty involved when trying to decide on the best cordless drill. Let’s begin with the most fundamental thing:

Build Quality/Drill Strength

“Build quality” is defined as how well made the drill is and how long it will last with vigorous use. Extended use of a drill that doesn’t contain a quality motor can cause it to “burn up”. Additionally, the drill’s clutch, will produces different torque intensity, can begin to malfunction. Drills also contain parts and/or switches that must function properly.

Just holding a drill in your hand can often provide some clue as to its build quality. If the drill looks inexpensive, it probably is. In my opinion, online reviews by experienced users are the best way to determine the build quality of a drill.

Build quality will disclose itself in time and with the resources of the internet you can reap the benefit of other people’s experience.

Drill Characteristics

The best cordless drill must be equipped with the basic characteristics that have become common, but it does not need to have a lot extras, particularly if you won’t use them. For instance, a keyless chuck is standard so that you can alternate bits without having to use an additional component. The best cordless drill must be equipped with a superior keyless chuck so that the bit will stay in place as you drill.

A helpful characteristic is a clutch. With a clutch you can set a maximum torque for the drill so that you do not have to worry about over-tightening screws and striping them. We assume that most drills will have a clutch. Another gratifying characteristic is being capable of multiple speeds. With multiple speeds you can use the drill at high speed and low torque or at a lesser speed and higher torque, making the drill more functional for various jobs.

Recently, a few newer drill models have been including an integrated LED light. This is a great feature if you have to drill in a dim area. However, it’s a convenience and not a necessity.
