You can easily put together an emergency kit for your car at the same time as the one for the house. They should have the same basic items in both. Do be sure that you have flares in your trunk as well. Also, plan for the type of weather you typically encounter where you live. For example, if you live in area that gets snow blizzards, make sure you have shovels, scrapers and kitty litter.

Put all your emergency items in a suitcase that is specifically for that purpose. You do not want to risk emptying it for a vacation and then never getting around to putting it back together. One that has wheels and is easy to take with you quickly will be best.

The kit should be gone through every six months to replace water and any food that is coming up on its expiration date.
