How Fast is Fast for a Power Wheelchair?

Electric wheelchairs come in various types. One main concern is speed. If this is your first time buying a wheelchair then this will force you to think about things you had not even considered before. If not, then you may know what you hope you can get but not be sure whether or not you can. In this article we survey the norms for speed in electric wheelchairs and show which brands and designs may be best suited to your real needs.

There is a range of normal for the speed of a wheelchair. Many have a top speed of 5mph. This depends upon the machinery for the powered chairs in one way, and depends on the speed and arm strength of the driver in the manual chairs along with limitations of the design.

However, in extreme cases, 8.5mph is considered fast for a wheelchair. You can purchase a wheelchair this fast from your local wheelchair provider. These chairs are generally better for those who may rely on public transportation or have to travel longer distances on a regular basis. A good example might be a student who has to get from one end of a college campus to another.

The fastest ones are best for pet owners who walk their pets and for people working with children mature enough to run around and young enough to really need you with them. People that engage in these activities or who play a lot of sports are most likely to need a high speed wheelchair.

Unless you are involved with sports or walking dogs or chasing children you will not need the fastest of wheelchairs. Everyone working in schools or otherwise needs one of the faster chairs, but within the normal range: say 6 or 7 mph top speed. Otherwise, 5mph will often be enough.

Speed is just one thing to consider when looking at wheelchairs. Its always a good idea to ask a lot of questions and try different types of chairs. Take a close look at your life and the things you do on a regular basis to determine if your power chair will work well for those situations. For instance, can you manage to maneuver around your bathroom? What about transportation? Will this chair fit into your vehicle? The answer to these types of questions will help you to narrow down your requirements.
