Housing Your Turtle Red Eared Slider

Building a home for your turtle. Red eared slider turtles need a relatively large amount of room. You need to have a properly sized tank or aquarium if you decide to keep your turtle indoors. You will also need things such as a water heater, artificial light and materials for \”land\”, in addition to water. You will have to create an artificial habitat for your outdoor turtle as well. You can quickly spend a lot of money on your red eared slider.

Your will have to make sure your indoor turtle has a large enough aquarium. Starting with a 20 to 50 gallon tank should be sufficient. However, if you bring in additional turtles you will need to increase the size to accommodate them. You should also make sure that their water is clean and that you have enough in the tank.

Lighting is also important. Turtles require sunlight for vitamin production and proper bone growth. If turtles don\’t get natural sunlight, you need to get a fluorescent light or other specially designed light. These will likely be available at your pet store.

You must also make sure that your turtle does not eat anything that could be harmful to its health. Having organic materials such as wood chips in your turtle\’s environment may lead to the turtle eating it and becoming sick. This is true for both indoor and outdoor turtles. Proper Nutrition for Your Turtle – Red Eared Slider

Feeding your turtle. Red eared slider turtles are mainly herbivorous in the wild and they can remain healthy living on a diet of greens or vegetables such as carrots, lettuce or cabbage or fruits such as berries. You may also feed them earthworms or live insects including spiders, crickets or beetles. Commercial turtle food is available in case your turtle isn\’t getting all of the nutrients it needs. But you need to keep in mind that turtles may be picky eaters sometimes, so you will have to discover what is effective for your turtle.

How often you feed your turtle and what they eat is in large part a function of your turtle\’s age. Younger turtles will eat more meat while older turtles may be strictly vegetarian.
