Choosing Your Wedding Menu

Food is a central part of many social events as well as the memories associated with those events. Of course the guests at your wedding will remember lots of things besides the food, but it is important to remember the food is important as well. People remember good food and bad food, as well as the service.

With this in mind you should make sure that you put some time into planning your wedding menu. There are so many choices to make, so where do you begin?

You will need to make a decision on how the meal will be served to your guests. Your choices are buffet style, family style or traditional meal service. How the meal is served affects your food choices and the atmosphere of your wedding.

A buffet style meal is usually a cheaper option and it allows you to offer many more side dishes than the other types of meal service. Many brides and grooms choose to have a buffet style meal not only for the money saving potential but also because this meal allows you to give all your guests the choices they want. Usually the guests can have as little or as much food on their plate as they want and they can choose based upon what the food looks like, and how they feel that day instead of making a choice months ahead of time.

If you have an ultra formal or elegant wedding you might want to have more traditional meal service. It would be more traditional for the meal to be served to your guests. This would include sending out a main food choice in the wedding invitations, so you guests can choice the main course months ahead of time. At your reception the meals would be brought out by the servers with the main food choice and side dishes already on the plates, with no other choices for your guests to make.

Even though family service is not used a lot it is still an option that you can consider. The best way to describe what family service is would be a cross between a buffet and waiter service. The reception would still employ people to deliver food to the tables, but instead of individual meals being brought to your guests, large bowls and different types of plates of food would be brought to each table. Then your guests would pass the food around and take how much they want of only the dishes that appeal to them.

Now that you know how you want your main course served it may be time to think about the appetizer table. Many weddings have appetizer tables set up for their guests, this way they can enjoy a snack during the cocktail hour. These tables are usually stocked with finger foods such as fruit, vegetables, dips, cheese and crackers. Talk to your caterer about what is available and decide what your guests may want to indulge in.

Of course your wedding will have the wedding cake, but many weddings also have a dessert table. If you want to offer extra desserts to your guests you can choose one or two or offer many small desserts. You can have cookies, brownies, tarts, muffins, puddings, chocolate and more.
