When you apply for a spousal visa with a US citizen or resident you require an interview as part of the process. It can be a very stressful part of obtaining a visa because there is so much at stake and the immigration officers are notoriously humorless and serious. There are several ways that you can prepare for the immigration interview questions and get your visa easily.

Be prepared to answer all kinds of personal questions about the nature of your relationship with your spouse and details about them and yourself. It is not nice to have to reveal to a stranger the color of your spouse’s underwear, but they are merely trying to ascertain that your relationship is genuine and continuing. You should be prepared to answer inquiries about where and when you met, how long you have been in the relationship, about the wedding, your spouse’s likes and dislikes and things that you do together.

You may be interviewed together or separately, but it is common to be split up and then the answers will be analyzed for inconsistencies. Know all about your spouse’s likes and dislikes, their life story, their favorite places, songs, food, colors and even the color of underwear they are wearing.

Do have knowledge of your spouses assets such as the make and model of their car, how much rent they pay, mortgage payments, credit cards and so on. Also you should be able to describe what your spouse’s house looks like including the type of furniture, the make of the stereo and TV, the color of the walls and other features of the house.

Before the interview you should gather evidence in written form of your relationship. This can include joint bank accounts, phone and electricity bills in both names or with the same address, details about joint membership of clubs and associations, invitations with both of you listed, photos at parties and social occasions.

It is important that you have US citizens who will verify your relationship in writing: these should be friends or family. Make sure you know all the details of your spouse’s family. How many siblings they have, where they live, who they are married to, what they do, their kids’ names and so on. The same goes for your spouse’s parents if they are still alive.

Make sure you arrive on time to the interview with all the required forms, identification and copies. You should be dressed neat and tidy for the interview as it will create a much better impression and show that you are serious about the interview process.

Don’t joke around with the immigration officer. Jokes made about drug trafficking, people smuggling, marriages of convenience and terrorism are not taken in good spirit. Don’t become defensive or have a bad attitude towards the interviewer it will not help your case.

If English is not your first language you are permitted to bring an interpreter to the interview. This is recommended so that you do not answer any questions badly due to lack of understanding. You will not be penalized in anyway for requiring an interpreter. Never answer questions that you are not sure you have completely understood.

The interview is an integral part of the visa process. By preparing well for the interview with your spouse you are less likely to have any problems with obtaining your visa. Be honest at all times in the interview as they are trained in body language to know when you are lying and they will already know everything about you before you arrive anyway.

There are several dos and don’ts to immigration interview questions that will help you to be totally prepared, ace your interview and land your visa. Get the inside scoop on the green card interview now!
