San Jose Water Damage Restoration – What Are Your Options

Posted by Eric Bowen 1 December, 2009

Water damage is no joke. Along with the damage the water alone can cause – loss of furniture, appliances, and sentimental memories like family photos – it can wreak havoc as it attracts insects, rodents, and germs that can cause deadly diseases. If you have an accident, or even need to clean up after a major disaster, you have some great San Jose water damage restoration specialists ready to help.

Water damage can occur for a variety of reasons. Storms, natural disasters such as mud slides or floods, plumbing disasters such as burst pipes, broken sewer lines, and even water damage that occurs as a fire being put out. It is for this reason that most companies that handle water damage and restoration issues also handle fire restoration as well. In all too many situations they go hand in hand.

Since almost every case turns out to be more complicated than anyone thought, you need to make sure your restoration company can handle just about anything. If your sewage line broke in the basement while you were on a two week vacation, chances are you have more issues to deal with than needing a sump pump! You need someone who can handle hazardous waste and maybe even do some foundation work and mold removal.

As you do your research, it’s also a good idea to ask if they work with insurance companies. Depending on how your damage occurred, there’s a good chance that some if not all of the damage is covered under your house insurance. If you can find a company that will be able to understand your coverage and work with you to either stay within your limits, or bill the company directly, that’s usually a big time saver. At the very least, it’s less paperwork you need to deal with.

Companies that do this type of work are usually made up of people who had prior careers in either fire fighting, building, hazardous waste cleanup, or something similar. It’s important to know their specialty and what they are certified to do and licensed to perform. You want to avoid companies that were started simply to “clean up”.

Make sure they have a valid insurance certificate as well. You already have enough to deal with. You don’t want to find out that as these people were trying to clean up one problem, they caused another – and can’t pay for the damage. The last thing you need is to have them break a door or ruin your front lawn with heavy equipment and then leave you with the bill.

If circumstances permit, get an estimate before allowing work to commence. You don’t want any more surprises.
