Shipping Lighters and Hazardous Material Restrictions

Many individuals choose to purchase high quality products such as Nibo cigar lighters over the Internet. There are very good reasons for doing so. There is usually a wider selection on Internet sites than one would find at their local store. The prices are oftentimes very competitive or, in some cases, much better than what one would usually find locally. The products are the same owing to the name brands. There are several restrictions on shipping that apply to such orders, however.

Cigar lighters are most commonly of the butane variety. This fuel is a high-pressure gas which is kept in canisters. The lighters are filled by holding the canister to a seal at the base of the device and depressing the can to release the butane. The pressure and the flammability of the gas make it a hazardous item and, as such, subject to shipping restrictions. Users may have some difficulty shipping these items depending upon local regulations.

When butane escapes into the air, it takes on a gaseous form. This fuel can ignite in the presence of the slightest spark. This means that the conditions in warehouses and shipping vehicles are not at all safe for butane unless special measures are taken. While the small amount of butane in a lighter may not seem like much of a threat, it is certainly enough to set off a much larger fire! Hence, the restrictions on shipping this and other fuel substances.

A butane lighter is also not a suitable shipping container though they are excellent for storing butane for normal use. Cans of butane are usually shipped by special arrangement. If one is shipping a lighter to a friend, never include a can of butane with it. A quick check of prohibited materials will reveal that pressurized, flammable gas is most certainly among them. Keep in mind that violating these restrictions can carry very severe penalties.

Butane lighters ordered online will have to be filled when they arrive so be sure to pick up some fuel before they come to the house. With high-quality lighters one is best off using high-quality fuel, as well. Fuels are rated by their impurity content and making certain to purchase low impurity fuel will ensure the best performance. Only fill the lighter from an approved container and only with butane fuel according to the instructions.
