The Many Things To See And Do In Carlisle
A very large city in England is Carlisle and if you actually ranked towns by their area than Carlisle is the largest in all of England. The city actually includes several of the surrounding towns. The Romans were the first to settle the area as they set up a city here during the 1st century. This spot was considered the capital of the roman settlements and is closely associated with Hadrian\’s Wall. When the Romans withdrew and the Danes were conquered this section was for a time part of Scotland.
Right next to the city is the Solway Firth which is a section of the Anglo Scottish border and separates it from Dumfries and Galloway. A lot of the city is located on the flood plains of the Eden River and much of the city has frequent floods. The climate is oceanic and only tends to fluctuate by about 20 degrees during the year.
Carlisle was the center for the Roman settlement and was called Luguvalium. This translates into the wall of Lugus. Much of the older buildings, the museum, castle and cathedral are all found within the city walls. This spot was once an important military stronghold as it was the last city before reaching Scotland. The castle was built in 1092 and once held Mary, Queen of Scots.
The town turned industrial in the 19th century and contained several food manufacturers, textile mills and engineering works. Today there are still plenty of food manufacturers in the area. There was once a canal linking the city to Port Carlisle but this has since been filled in. Today the railway follows the old canal.
There are some famous companies associated with the town as the Metal Box factories, Carr\’s of Carlisle and Kangol all still have factories in the area. Cavaghan & Gray is the biggest employer in the area as they produced foods for the major supermarkets. Carr\’s is one of the best know food manufactures as they are best known for their biscuits.
Many railway lines run through the city and at one time over 7 stopped here. This was once the home of the largest railway marshaling yard in all of Europe but it has since closed down. The West coast Main Line is the main railway today and it stops at the citadel stations. Citadel station is also the terminus for the Settle Carlisle railway line.
Football is common in Carlisle and the local team is Carlisle United. The first of the football teams was formed in 1928 and while it has been successful over the years Carlisle United is more known for producing excellent players rather than a top football team.
