What Is The Law Society?

Posted by Simon P Jennings 27 November, 2009

The solicitors of UK joined together to form a society of their own, can be regarded as their trade union, having the idea behind to give their profession legal platform to provide services to their clients on the basis of social justice. They train and qualify undergrad, graduate lawyers.

In the mid of the last millennium, the legal profession was divided into two general categories of barristers and attorneys. Barristers were dealing with the real estate problems; on the other hand, attorneys were involved in resolving the lawsuits. Later, they came under a single name of solicitors. There were good solicitors and bad too, which were creating bad name for the whole of the profession.

In’23, well-known attorneys called a meeting, and they agreed that they should have form the London Law Institution where the service was properly offered, and standards were set. The term London was used to show that the society would enhance the services of the whole nation, and show their aspirations.

The society was formed on 2 June’25. The society came to be known as the Law Society, although the formal title was The Society of Attorneys, Solicitors, Proctors, and others not being Barristers, who practiced in the court of Law and Equity of the United Kingdom. Then in’03, the society changed its official name to The Law Society.

Initial agenda of the society was to deracinate fraudulent practitioners. They asked for the right to access the accounts of each, and every practitioner in order to find the deceptive ones. They issue annual certificate of clearance to the ones having a clear record, which is valid up to one year. They have also formed a Consumer Complaint Service to receive complaints about solicitors.

The best way to propagate any idea is to educate the right people in the right way. They presented many ideas in form of lectures to improve their practicing standards. According to the Solicitors Act’60, they were given the right to set up an examination system of their own; they also established their own school of law, which was later named as College of Law.

The society had a strong agenda from the beginning, which enabled it to have powerful connections with the Government. The fact that they independently waged war against deceitful practitioners was enough to bring them out into the open, and have a special relationship with the Government on the Law reform, and the formulation of legal policy. Today the society monitors, maintains validating control over undergraduates, and postgraduates, training contracts, and ensures continuing professional development.

The services offered by the society have ever been increasing since its inception, like a dining club, and a library were added to the society profile. A Gazette is released every year since’03, which provided an insight into their organisation, which improved their ties with other societies, and parties. They also provide advice to members at insignificant fee, licensed practice, and other management services. In order to publish the philosophy, and the literature of the profession, a research unit was added in’88.
