Starting Your Own T-Shirt Printing Company at Home
Have you ever thought about starting your own screen printing company? It is rather cheap to start a t-shirt printing business at home. I read about one guy who began a screen printing business with almost nothing. To start off, he built the frames from used lumber and used old wedding dress material for the screens. He began printing and selling signs. He also began to print magnets, baseball hats and shirts. He was able to plan and build his own 4 color printing press.
It wouldn’t be that hard, or costly to get into the screen printing company. For under one hundred dollars you could purchase the equipment to screen print shirts. The absolute minimum equipment you would need would be a frame, photo emulsion, a cheap light, ink, a squeegee, masking tape, and t-shirts. Another idea would be to build your own printing press. If that’s not your cup of tea, you could acquire one for another hundred dollars.
It is always a good idea to upgrade your tools as your company gets bigger. Printing each shirt only costs a couple of cents per shirt. You can acquire blank shirts from places such as Michael’s for a couple of dollars each. To save even more money, you could get blank shirts in bulk or purchase box lots of shirts from eBay. Some places that you could run your business would be your garage or basement.
What I have seen many people do is design and print shirts, and then sell them on eBay. If that is what you are interested in doing, look on eBay and find what manner of shirts people are purchasing. Are they buying dog shirts, cat shirts, karate shirts, etc.? Develop your own original artwork, print a couple of shirts, and list them on eBay. While it will cost you a couple bucks per shirt, it will only cost a few cents to print them, and it will be possible to sell them on eBay for $10-$15.
Some other screen printing company opportunities would be regional rock bands, baseball teams, family reunions, etc. If you know someone who needs shirts, offer your services and make a little profit. It is crucial that you do a good quality job. After you’ve done a small number of jobs, you will in all probability begin getting word of mouth referrals. Another idea to drive business would be to get business cards printed up and posting them on local bulletin boards to advertise your custom printed shirts.
