Where To Begin With A New Lighting Display
A guide for the outdoor lighting novice
This may your first Christmas in your beautiful new home. Or, it could be that this is the first year you have had the time or inclination to proceed in that direction. Doubtlessly, you do need some advice to begin. If you’re a little weary about working with electricity, you might want to consult a professional electrician to assist you. An electric shock is no fun and certainly no way to begin the Christmas season.
Whether you have a small or a large home, there is an outdoor lighting idea perfect for your application. Some people who just begin decorating their property start somewhat small and add to the effect each year. Others are determined to have the best looking decorated house in the neighborhood and go “all out” with their choices. If you’re one of those who will start small, why not choose a spotlight directed at the special wreath on your front door. Sometimes, two spotlights are used, one in green and one in white for a dramatic effect.
Ideas for your first Outdoor Lighting project
Even a small decorated and lighted Christmas tree situated on a front porch or stoop can be very attractive. Use either clear white lights or colored ones, whichever you like. Another small addition could be a set of LED lights draped around the porch railing for a finished look.
You will probably want to have a lighted Santa Claus in your front yard for their enjoyment, or perhaps a Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer. Small children get so excited over this sign that Christmas is arriving soon. And, as they come on again each evening, the little squeals of delight continue. A lot of people agree that “Christmas” is for children. When it comes to Santa Claus it certainly is.
Equipment to shop for
Go to your local outdoor lighting store to pick up the needed equipment and supplies for your decorating venture. Naturally, you’ll need several substantial extension cords that are outdoor specific. Next, most people opt on using a timer to turn their light display on and off each day. In addition, to being convenient, it is an added security measure for your property. No one will know you’re away from home. Be certain that any power cords or lights that you purchase are UL approved.
One good thing about the second year you decorate, all you need to do is gather everything from the year before and you’ll know exactly where to begin. And especially with children, you won’t forget to decorate; they’re sure to ask you about it early on. Have fun with them!
